Thank you so much for all that you did for my team and I on the 2 day ethical selling course. The team had such a buzz on Wednesday morning and it a fantastic sight to see even the more timid members having the confidence to sell. It's funny because I always though I was a good salesman and based that upon the amount of private work I was generating every month BUT and this is such a big "but" , I wasn't seeing how much MORE business I could get by changing the way I explained my treatment options. The BIG thing for me was that I have learnt how to overcome "Objections".

 

Being the cynic that I am, I was sceptical about the testimonials on your website about how much work dentists had generated after attending your courses but, (and shame on me), and I laugh as I type this....I was wrong to be sceptical because guess what????  Ashley Latter is quite a unique guy - he is a Manchester United fan, he actually goes to the games and he lives in Manchester!! More seriously, he has arguably had the biggest single influence on my practice than anyone else for many years.

Orthodontics is seeing a period of dramatic change, both in terms of new appliance technologies, which are revolutionising our approach to many treatments and the new NHS contract. The decline in funding from the NHS is having a significant impact on all practices already and we are only just at the start of that process! For any of us to prosper, we need to dramatically increase our revenue from private work.

 

In recent years I have heard many speakers, both Orthodontists and marketing gurus, talk about promoting private practice and although I had implemented some of the ideas I felt it was time to move things forward. I was convinced that the whole concept had to include everyone in the practice....we had just finished the Investors in People award so my team were in "go for it" mode. A few people had mentioned Ashley once or twice and so I picked up the phone.....

 

My idea was to have him run a course purely on Orthodontics for all our staff and also the staff of a colleagues practice. His marketed courses were geared to the Dental marketplace as a whole, but I wanted the full works, totally limited to Orthodontics. We chatted at length and he agreed to run a two-day programme at my practice for the two combined teams. As the day came nearer, some of my gang were becoming a bit apprehensive - one of the newer girls said she would "never be able to talk to patients about treatments and money" and generally they all wondered what we had let ourselves in for...but they had two days not having patients in the practice so it might not be so bad after all....and also they thought he looked cute on his picture.

 

The whole programme is very interactive. Ashley shows various selling techniques and uses scenarios of everyday practice patient/orthodontist situations. Everyone practices how to deal with objections to purchasing treatment and as the course progressed everyone's ability, performance and therefore confidence grew. My very apprehensive girl was just brilliant and has continued to be so.

 

In my view two days are needed to see the benefits - it takes this time to develop new skills and having subsequently helped Ashley with other courses, in some cases to overcome initial scepticism. Everyone is taken outside their individual comfort zone and at first this can be a little off -putting. It's a bit like having ski, golf or tennis lessons; at first the "practice sessions" in the first day seem to make you perform worse - you need to assimilate the information overnight and in day 2 it all comes together and you can see the benefits. Immediately after the course we set aside some time as a practice to discuss how we were going to implement the new ideas and skills we had learnt. It means reorganising the appointments and you need to do it immediately - if not, as the days pass by you won't do it and the chance is lost. The effect of the course on the practice has been tremendous. Everyone works with even greater enthusiasm as a team and are far more involved in the selling and marketing side of Orthodontics.

 

Patient uptake of treatment has increased considerably. They like chatting to the staff about treatment and will often divulge concerns which they haven't shared initially with me. I consider the course my best investment for ages; so much so that he is coming back to do a refresher day for us in a couple of weeks. If you genuinely want to change your practice for the better, Ashley's course is a must. Shame about his football allegiance though....

I think we would all agree that dental and orthodontic practices must adapt to the changing financial environment, with more emphasis on developing private income. To a cynical Welshman the words and phrases; excellent, fantastic, marvellous, eye opening and light bulb moment do not spring to mind easily. However, all these apply to your programme. I thought all I was going to be told was how to sell but I was wrong. What struck me was that getting the patients to say yes was little to do with selling and everything to do with building relationships.This not only means success for the patient and orthodontist, but builds a deeper relationship between them, bringing personal and proffesional satisfaction through making people happy. At 8.00a.m. the VERY NEXT MORNING after attending your programme I saw a new patient for a consultation. I applied your techniques and she agreed to a comprehensive course of lingual orthodontic treatment there and then.
